  Foreword

The Department of Mines and Geology (DMG) is the sole government organization which is responsible for all types of geological survey, mineral exploration and administration of Mining Rules and Regulations in Nepal. The department since its establishment has been carrying out geological mapping, mineral exploration and feasibility studies of mineral based industries. Later it has extended its activities to provide diversified geo-scientific services in the field of petroleum and natural gas exploration, seismological research by regular recording and monitoring of earthquakes in Seismological Centers one in Kathmandu and another in Birendranagar (Surkhet) through the networks of 21 seismic stations located in different parts of the country. In addition to that recently 22 GPS stations are set up in different parts of the country with the technical collaboration of Department Analyse Surveillance and Environment (DASE), France and California Institute of Technology (CALTECH), USA. By understanding the immediate need of hazard maps for infrastructural development works in the country and well planned development of urban areas, DMG has started Landslide and Earthquake hazard mapping, engineering and environmental geological investigations, hazard assessment of urban areas and regular publication of Geological maps, Landslide hazard maps, Earthquake epicenter maps, Engineering and Environmental geological maps.

All these promotional documents have been prepared to offer the geological, geohazards and mineral resources information to the potential national and foreign users, investors, researchers and public at-large. The promotional documents also present the fundamental legislative framework for mining administration, licensing and petroleum agreements. This document intends to fulfill the necessity to disseminate the information about the activities, achievements and prospects in geological and mineral sector of the country.

I would like to thank and appreciate the efforts made by the staff especially Planning, Evaluation and Information Section of DMG in preparing this document.
